ZERO INFLUENCE

The Influencer Climate Charter

ZERO INFLUENCE is a Climate Charter led by influencer marketing agency Sociably and carbon offsetting specialists SQSTR. The Charter brings together like-minded influencers who acknowledge the impact of their professional work on the environment.

The threat of climate change is real and its effects are imminent. To protect our planet for future generations we must take radical and immediate steps to reduce our personal CO2 emissions.

The influencer industry creates a significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions each year and this leads to environmental damage if nothing is done to stop it. We have a responsibility to take steps to limit this impact and to use our engaged platforms to share this important and time critical message.

We accept that carbon emissions are often an inevitable side effect of the work of an influencer. Our goal is to assist our members to discuss the topic and to take positive steps towards achieving sustainable working practices without impacting on an individual’s livelihood or ability to create engaging content.

Together we can take small steps towards a more sustainable future.

The climate is changing, and the impacts are already too costly for people and the planet. Countries need ambitious plans to cut global emissions by 45% by 2030.

The Guiding Principles

Our members share a common goal to achieve change through open dialogue with their followers. They agree to take steps to make changes themselves and in so doing increase awareness of climate change in the wider community. As a member of the Charter they commit to the following Guiding Principles.

1. Always consider the environmental impacts of your work

We encourage members to make climate change front of mind when decision making. Considering the carbon footprint of a project, whether that be a photoshoot or influencer trip, is the first step towards understanding how everyday activities have an impact on climate change.

2. Reduce CO2 emissions from your campaign work

Travel is often a significant part of an influencer’s work and this, together with many other daily activities generates large amounts of CO2. Where it is not possible to reduce your carbon footprint (for example if you’re required to fly to a location) you will explore ways to offset this impact. If required SQSTR can provide you with guidance on offsetting.

3. Introduce more sustainable working practices

Small changes in daily working practices have a big impact on climate change. Just storing an email in your inbox generates CO2 emissions! Members are encouraged adopt best practices and will receive expert guidance from SQSTR.

4. Proactively discuss climate change with audiences

Reducing CO2 emissions from influencer campaigns is half of the story. Our members will commit to talking openly and regularly with their audiences about the steps they are taking individually, promoting the conversation and increasing general awareness.
